WHAT IS COPYRIGHT

Copyright protects your book from being copied by others. So, to protect your book, characters and settings from being copied, you will need to Copyright it. It is also advisable that you register the copyrighted material with federal authority.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COPYRIGHT AND REGISTRATION WITH FEDERAL AUTHORITY?

There's a difference. Let's use an analogy. Let's say Mr. A read your book and made a copy of it before you came to Copyright it and was told someone has a right on your book, if you cannot prove to the court that he read your book prior before copyrighting it, then you have no case. But when you get your book registered with federal authority, it doesn't matter if he read it or not, because constructive notice makes prior knowledge of your book irrelevant.

After registration with the federal authority, your book, all it's characters, settings and stories are all yours. You can assert your rights if there's any infringement on any part of the material.
Once you publish a book, the characters, the stories and the settings are all protected under the copyright laws of the United States of America, but if you want to protect the use of character and any major setting of your work, then it's necessary it, even before publishing your book.
It is highly advisable to register your Copyrighted material to enjoy the full benefits of a Copyrighted book.

The Major reason behind all these is notice. If two people cone up with the same material at the same time without prior knowledge of each other, both will share in the equal claim of the Copyright. In the Same vein, if you keep your manuscript in your hard drive and someone comes up with a similar material, you would be out of luck in Copyrighting the material.
